For some reason or another, you may find yourself needing to learn math independently. You could be studying for college placement tests, homeschooling, preparing for career readiness tests, and more. Recently, I took on a position as a GED Instructor! While doing professional development for teaching the GED (all available for free at ged.com, just click the ‘Educators and Admin’ portal in the top right corner), I stumbled across some free resources for High School Math curriculum that I wanted to share here (and add some of my own!).
The resources below are in no particular order. In January 2022, Math Aunty will be partnering with SAHGE Academy to release self-paced asynchronous math classes for a fee. While we are waiting for that launch, here are some free resources to get you started. Khan Academy – No list of free math resources would be complete without mention of Khan Academy. Funded by generous philanthropists, Khan Academy will always be free. Their course “Get Ready for Algebra 1” is a wonderful preparation for pre-Algebra. Khan Academy is accessible on all student devices.
Learner.org – This resource is a class for math teachers, making it ideal for Homeschool Parents to follow along with their scholars. They take a deep dive into building the mathematical foundations for Patterns, Functions, and Algebra. They also have a collection of lesson plans in science in all subjects with web-based applets and printable worksheets.
GED Math Crash Course by Light & Salt Learning is a resource designed by Kate Redmon. She has a number of units available online and advises students to take the GED Ready test following each unit until students reach a 150 or higher. For students in a homeschool environment, the GED covers the course content for most homeschool requirements. Educators can create pacing for their scholars to move through the tests and use the GED Ready Test as a benchmark.
Math Is Fun Online Collections – On Math is Fun, they list a directory of topics related to specific math classes. Linked is the directory of Algebra Topics. Students could spend 1-2 weeks of instruction on each subtopic.
EngageNY Math Curriculum – EngageNY is a curriculum resource I’ve used faithfully for the last several years. Their student worksheets are organized thoughtfully – providing everything students need to follow a discussion and take relevant notes. Their teacher guides are incredibly detailed – I appreciate their “common student error” notes and discussion tips. Their curriculum is largely applications/project-based: students are introduced to ideas through real-world applications or mini-projects and then the concept is formalized until they are ready to be tested. They provide curriculum from grades PreK-8, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Precalculus.
CK12 FlexBooks – On CK12, there are FlexBooks – digital textbooks with interactive content for students and teachers. There is Adaptive Practice – a personalized practice question tool for math and science concepts. There are PLIX – play, learn, interact, and explore math and science concepts. Together, these three resources can provide the foundation for classes in several subjects. I would recommend choosing a FlexBook and following through it for instructional time and using the Adaptive Practice as a homework tool. The beautiful thing about CK12 is that they’ve been around for a long time and their products can integrate beautifully with several Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Google Classroom, Canva, Blackboard, and more.
