#FreeMaff: Factoring Quadratic Equations when a is not 1

#FreeMath is a series of blog posts for students! Whenever we create resources for our students that are in a neat and organized (i.e. presentable) fashion, we will share them online.

Factoring quadratic equations is a big topic in high school math classes! You see it in algebra 1, algebra 2, and in pre-calculus! Many students quickly catch on to quadratic equations where you just determine what multiplies to c and adds to b, but when a doesn’t equal 1, things get a little more complicated. You split the bx term so that you can factor two smaller equations! Check out this step-by-step process I sent to one of my precalculus students.

Here’s another example!

You can also use this technique when a=1! Try it and see if you get the same answer.

I recommend the Microsoft Math Solver to any student who is practicing factoring quadratic equations at home! It will show you step by step how to factor, using the quadratic equation and the method above! Until next time.
